Hi,

Are there any members of SAGA who live in or near Stephenson or Whiteside
Counties in Illinois who would have information about the Mennonites who
lived in those areas around 1860-1870?

My great grandparents, Daniel and Hannah (Snyder) Burkhard, were married at
Freeport, Stephenson County, in 1872. Hannah's parents were Preacher
Christian and Mary (Gingrich) Snyder. The Snyder family moved from
Pennsylvania to Freeport sometime between 1854 and 1859. Preacher Christian
and Mary are buried at the Freeport Mennonite Church Cemetery.

In 1870 it was reported that Daniel Burkhard was a farm laborer for John
Ysell in Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.

I would like to go to those areas next week ahead of the SAGA meeting if it
might lead to more information.

I'm also making an inquiry to the Freeport Mennonite Church.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Again to All,

I would like to report that after only one day after posting my query above
that a number of very nice people have already responded to it.

All responses have a common thread: What type or types of records was
looking for?
The answer: Land Records. is to actually go to the courthouse.
I would like to know if and where these families had land in the area. And
I know now that the only way to  obtain 19th century land records for these
two counties is to actually go to the courthouse. I'm not surprised.

I hope this clarifies my posting.

Many thanks to SAGA for providing this list-serve to be able to contact so
many people in such a short time.

Blessings to all!
