Attached is a pdf of an Article in Pensylvania Folkife that details all the various spellings of family names.
I often get contacted by members who find it stressful that their ancestor is listed with the "incorrect" spelling of the family name. I have to inform them that family members often change their names for a number of reasons, and their descendants when posting genealogies prefer to use their current family name spelling. I even have to remind them that tombstones may have different spellings for the family name that are not the same for both spouses.
Hope this is helpful those who never know if it is Bare, Bear, Bair, Byre, etc.

I have an obituary for one of my ancestors that lists his name three times
in the article spelled three different ways.

Here's another case in point:
Jacob BURCKHARD and wife Annie BURKHART, side by side in the Weaverland
Mennonite Church cemetery in East Earl, Lancaster County, PA.

The most important thing to remember is that in doing your research explore all the possible ways to spell the name. Same for first names as well. The use of nicknames and other names often confuses researchers.
I find this reference a good thing to have on hand to remind you what other spellings might be.

A reminder -
When searching in the SAGA databases you can also select if you are
looking for exact, soundex or metaphone. I find this very helpful when
I'm not sure how a name is spelled or they are spelled differently in
other databases.
