My name is Frances Otto. I have Mast relatives through my grandmother.

I believe the book you are mentioning is the same one I picked up at the
Hesston College Bookstore because the authors of that book are professors
at Hesston and discovered that they were relatives. The book was written as
fiction but they create a time line that seems valid based on a story my
Grandfather Eli D. Yoder who was a descendent of Moses Yoder who was one of
the first Amish settlers in Arthur, Illinois, back in 1865, he told in one
of his family record books. As of this writing I am unable to find that
particular Family Record book.

I have family record books of Levi J. (born Jan 4 1857) and Sovilla(Miller)
Mast and Henry J. Mast and Lucy J. Yoder.  Levi was the father of my
grandmother Katie Ann, born April 20, 1896. She was the ninth child of
Levi.  She died Sept 14, 1971.

He tells the story of Jacob Maust came from Switzerland on the ship
"Charming Polly", landing at Philadelphia on October 8, 1737. He lived and
died in Berks County,Pennsylvania. He had a son Joseph, born in 1764.
Joseph moved to Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He died in May, 1946 and was
buried in a small cemetery on this farm. According to my grandfathers
story, Joseph had a son named Daniel who moved to Holmes Co, Ohio and is
buried near Mt. Hope, Ohio If I remember correctly this is where the story
of the Kinship Revealed started. One of the sons moved to North Carolina
and started the Mast General Store and had slaves according to the story.
From what I understand that store still exists.

On the Otto side of my family, Daniel D. Otto who accompanied Mose Yoder
and Daniel Miller to Arthru , Illinois from Somerset, Pennsylvania, married
a Eve Mast who was born Feb. 15, 1828. She died June 14, 1903. She was
Daniel D. Otto's second wife. There were no children.

I would be interested in more of your Mast family findings. I had trouble
getting information from my mother and my aunts about their mother, Katie
Ann. I remembered her but as a child I only observed her . It seems from
what I read in that family record, in the early 1900's many of that family
died as a result of that flu that made many people sick. they didn't have
health resources that they had later.

Sincerely,
Frances Otto

I, too, had asked about this book at a SAGA meeting that I was able to
attend when it was in Arthur, Illinois. I was told it was not true. Because
I study the issue of racism in America, I had been curious if Mennonites or
Amish had owned slaves.
My grandfather married Katie Ann Mast who was the daughter of Levi J. Mast,
son of Jacob and Sarah(Miller) Mast who was born Jan. 4, 1857.
