They make their money by signing up everyone who downloads the free software into their Legacy Video Webinar series, which is an annual subscription. Many software companies are realizing that they can make more money through annual subscriptions than they can through one-time sales for life.
You can opt out of the annual subscription, but that requires both a reading of the fine print and personal initiative.

Saturday evening, I participated in a Zoom meeting given by the
Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. I asked about the new version of
Legacy. There were several responders that had criticisms of it. The new
version may not have all the kinks straightened out.
Also, Legacy works only on Windows computers. Mac users can use it by
creating a Windows partition, using Parallels, or some other Windows
emulator but there are additional problems. My assessment for Mac users is:
don't use it.
For Windows folks, it is probably like a new version of anything--there are
bugs that need correcting, and they will correct them.

Walt's comment reminds me of endless hours I spent in background of
updates. Some may be neccessairy in regard of IT-security, else the
better motto seems to never change a running system. First place, my
question was what promising features to expect that freeware progs don't
have. Second, how far organisations charge a fair price to cover costs,
or rather aim to make money by selling extras, or the data uploaded by
users, or even their users' proiles. But that's just MY thoughts ...
