Hello My friends, I am stumped.
I have a John Granville Troyer b 25 Aug 1890 in Maryland, d 1 Jan 1978 in Maryland.
Death Certificate lists parents as UNKNOWN.  WHO WERE THEY?

I find him in a 1920 Maryland US Census, but not in 1900 or 1910.
I did find a marriage in 1912 to Sarah Curtis (found her parents and census for 1910).

I had hope to find John in that same census—she was from Davisville (?) on the marriage application, he was from Butler MD.

Any additional assistance which would reveal his parents name would be appreciated.

I don’t suppose you know anything about any siblings? I found plenty of other Troyers in Maryland, but none that I thought were him. Any hint of him being a foster child or adopted? I’ll keep my eye open for him.

Thanks,

For what its worth, a friend who is researching the Mennonite/Amish took a look and here is what she said:

I quickly looked into the request for information on John Granville Troyer’s parents.  I have a book called Troyer Family History by Hilda Troyer written in 1984.  This book pertains mainly with my ancestor Michael Troyer, Sr. and his descendants.  The book contains history of when the Troyer line came to the colonies and bits about where they moved to.  My brief look through the book did not find any mention of any family living in Maryland and I did not see a name of Granville anywhere.  Most of this family settled in Pennsylvania then to Ohio.  One branch of the line did move to Canada.

Has Royce looked into checking to see if John’s parents perhaps came over via a ship before he was born? He may want to look into ship manifests to see if any Troyer families arrived. Or his parents could have come over young and unmarried then met up earlier.  I haven’t had the need to check ship manifests into the mid to late 1800 so I am unsure where to look for this information.

Or could the parents have been living in Canada and moved to Maryland? If this is the case, then they would possibly be descended from John Troyer, son of Michael Troyer, Sr.  I do not have much information on John.  The book only has two children listed for him and his wife.  The author states that the information is most likely incomplete.

I hope this information is somewhat helpful to Royce.
